Language and literacy Development
At Sunshine Academy, we believe language is the foundation of confidence, connection, and lifelong learning. From the earliest years, children learn best through warm, loving interactions with attentive caregivers.
Our teachers intentionally talk, sing, read, and respond to each child’s sounds, words, and gestures throughout the day. Research shows that when adults actively engage with infants and toddlers—responding to babbling, early words, and curiosity—children develop stronger communication skills and a richer vocabulary as they grow.
Learning to read and write doesn’t start in kindergarten—it begins at birth. Through everyday experiences such as sharing books, telling stories, singing songs, and conversation-filled play, children naturally build early literacy skills while gaining confidence, motivation, and a love for learning.
In addition to English and Spanish, children are introduced to basic words from the language of the country we study each month (such as hello, goodbye, and thank you). This exposure helps children develop cultural awareness, curiosity about the world, and respect for different languages in a fun and age-appropriate way.
At Sunshine Academy, families and teachers work together to nurture confident communicators and joyful learners.
